And Now: A Guide for Guidebook Authors
There are plenty of ads for travel writers: most promise free trips and lucrative assignments. All you have to do is fork over $149 to learn the secret to fame, fortune and round-the-world trips. Then there are the solid, researched how-to books that teach neophytes how to construct appealing articles and approach editors. But these are all geared to the newspaper, magazine and internet markets.
At long last, a guide written exclusively for writers of travel books has appeared. And the scope of this one includes guidebooks, directories, travel memoirs, and how-to-do-it manuals. Barbara Hudgins, a best-selling guidebook author, has put together this helpful compilation that is as useful to seasoned travel journalists as it is to the aspiring travel writer.
Crafting the Travel Guidebook covers such diverse subjects as: finding your category and niche, formatting and boundaries, understanding your audience and finding your voice. There are also sections on travel writing tips and research, copyright and plagiarism, where to find photographs and illustrations and editing and rewriting. A final section is devoted to understanding the book publishing world and contains a 15-page list of publishers who accept travel books.
The book is available at all online bookstores.
